About Alan

I was born in the Shetland Isles in 1972. I have since lived in Glasgow and Dumfries and now live in Halifax in West Yorkshire.

My favourite media for painting are fine line ink, pencil/charcoal, watercolour and acrylic.

Favourite subjects include old architecture and dramatic landscapes and a lot of my work is inspired by the scenery of my native Shetland Isles although I have painted as far afield as the French Alps and the Australia.

As you will see from the comments on many of the pieces, I do many privately commissioned pieces, mostly by word of mouth.

In my woodworking I concentrate wherever possible on using recycled and reclaimed timber, which, while it involves more effort in preparation gives the finished pieces much more character.
